Unintentional community.

James Carse makes an observation in Finite and Infinite games. "My parents could have wanted a child, but they could not have wanted me."

This brings me to a point that has been stuck in my craw about the phrase 'intentional community'.  I can intend a community, but I can't know what community I am intending.

We only open up a space to be filled.

  1. Yeah. Just open up, and see who shows up, who is compatible. Good idea to let people know your basics before they show, though. I ended up in Earthaven with two cats, only to find they had a cat-hostile policy.

  2. We have been building community in Colorado, something of a trial run, at a small farm. You never know who will show up, or what the community will become after they are there. But it is important to be able to turn people away, even though as a last resort.
